As a Senior Design Engineer in the Design Engineering function based at our Shanghai or Shenzhen office in China, your primary role will be to collaborate with Dyson internal teams, contract manufacturers, and ODM/JDM partners to ensure the successful delivery of mechanical designs and product integration. Drawing upon your technical expertise and skillsets, you will ensure the quality and timely delivery of work produced by our development partners in a cost-effective manner.

Responsibility

  • Requirement management: Support to manage and maintain the subsequent changes of technical specification and design requirements.
  • Detail Design: Perform Sustaining work to continuously improve product quality, reduce costs, increase production throughput, and evaluate potential alternative suppliers or contract manufactures. Maintaining engineering deliverables including 3D model, engineering drawings, tolerance stacks, engineering BOM, etc.
  • Build evaluation: Evaluate the build process to confirm its effectiveness and efficiency in achieving design and project goals. Assess the quality of build outputs against the requirements, ensuring they meet the established standards.
  • Test evaluation: Provide technical guidance in test planning and the development of test methods. Drive the execution and reporting of testing activities, ensuring that the tests are conducted properly, and results are accurately documented.
  • Risk & Issues Management: Managing complex problems with good understanding of 8D, taking the responsibility to develop design solution with a good technical justification with tools including Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA), lessons learned, 8D, prototyping, etc.
  • Design Change Management and Part Approval: Review and approve Change Request, review engineering deliverables including drawings and engineering BOM, part approval or Deviation Request, ensuring the estimated efforts, risks and benefits are satisfactory before proceeding.

About you 

  • A degree in a relevant engineering or science discipline or equivalent. Mechanical Engineering is preferred.
  • Minimum of around 5 years work experience for mechanical/product design.
  • Sound understanding of mechanical/product design principles and the development of products and technologies through prototyping to mass production, plastic parts design especially.
  • Good understanding of multiple tooling and manufacturing techniques, and ability to review DFM reports (injection/compression/diecasting tools, etc).  
  • Proven experience of delivering creative design solutions that improve upon existing product designs 
  • A creative and considered approach to problem solving, following clear design processes.  
  • Problem Solving Tools (8D, P Diagram, Fishbone, etc.) 
  • Data Science or Statistical Tools (Design for 6 Sigma, Pareto, DOE, etc.) 
  • 3D Modelling and engineering drawing tools (CAD)
  • Practical and methodical design development through hands on rig building, prototyping and testing.  
  • Ability to plan ahead, prioritize tasks and coordinate with the work of others.  
  • Technical and personal credibility to work effectively in cross-functional design teams throughout the project development cycle.
