About us

At Dyson we think differently, challenge convention and are unafraid to make mistakes. We’re creative, collaborative, practical and enthusiastic. In our world‑class Research, Design & Development (RDD) organisation you’ll work with leading technical specialists and highly motivated, creative people to invent, design and develop market‑leading products. Truly different and better.

About the role

As a Senior Design Engineer in New Category NPI, you’ll help discover and develop disruptive new product concepts, features, and technologies that are completely new to market. You’ll move rapidly from idea to experiment to prototype, generating evidence that informs product direction and de risks development. Joining our world-class research, design, and development (RDD) team, you’ll collaborate with technical specialists and creative engineers to build breakthrough products and shape Dyson’s future.

What we need you to do…

  • Generate original ideas and identify market opportunities, turning first‑principles thinking into compelling product concepts and platform architectures.
  • Prototype rapidly (hand‑built rigs and 3D‑printed parts) to evaluate feasibility, user value and performance; test multiple hypotheses in parallel to answer the most important questions fast.
  • Design and integrate electro‑mechanical systems (actuators, sensors, transmission, mechanisms, power electronics) to prove novel functions and performance improvements.
  • Bring-up and integrate electronics: interface with partner/third‑party boards, adapt layouts for concept needs, and integrate sensors/actuators to run functional validation on prototypes.
  • Use CAD (e.g., NX) to develop scalable mechanical systems; manage concepts with PLM (e.g., Teamcenter) and validate using hand calculations.
  • Design and build test methods and rigs; run lab‑based experiments and simulations to validate performance, reliability and robustness, balancing cost and manufacturability.
  • Analyse and interpret test/simulation data; present insights and clear recommendations in technical/design reviews with cross‑functional stakeholders.
  • Create and maintain specifications, design rationale and test plans, ensuring traceability and clarity in technical decision‑making.
  • Collaborate with Research/NST and external suppliers to integrate novel technologies into concepts and subsystems.
  • Investigate real user problems and emerging home environments to inspire and steer meaningful innovation in new categories and formats.
  • Keep current with industry trends and new technologies and apply them to elevate product design and performance.
  • Take ownership of engineering challenges, resolving issues thoroughly with technical excellence and accountability, and contribute to team/department improvement initiatives.

About you

Qualifications & experience

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical/Mechatronics/Electronics Engineering or a closely related discipline; exposure to product/industrial design is advantageous.
  • 4+ years’ experience in product development, tackling complex user needs and technical problems in electro‑mechanical systems, or mechanisms.
  • Demonstrable creativity and first‑principles problem solving, with an iterative, evidence‑led approach (prototype → test → learn → iterate).
  • Strong mechanical design fundamentals (tolerancing, materials, mechanisms) and proficiency in 3D CAD (preferably NX), plus experience with PLM (Teamcenter).
  • Experience validating concepts via hand calculations, and via rapid lab testing and bespoke rigs.
  • Hands‑on integration of sensors/actuators and control electronics into early concepts; comfortable modifying or adapting partner electronics to suit prototype needs.
  • Familiarity with requirements/systems engineering and writing/maintaining clear specifications, design rationales and test plans.
  • Awareness of manufacturing processes and tooling, DFM/DFA, and early cost/performance trade‑off.
  • Excellent communication skills; able to present your work effectively across disciplines and to business stakeholders.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English to collaborate with global teams.

How you’ll work

  • Methodical, user‑focused design process with a track record of delivering creative, value‑driven solutions that balance performance, cost and time.
  • Thrives in a fast‑paced, ambiguous environment, able to plan and prioritise your work—and coordinate with others—to meet project goals efficiently.
  • Confident working with minimal supervision, while knowing when to seek alignment or escalate risks early.

Benefits

Dyson monitors the market to ensure competitive salaries and bonuses. Beyond that, you’ll enjoy professional growth, leadership development and new opportunities through regular reviews and dynamic workshops. With a vibrant culture, access to the latest devices and a relaxed dress code reflecting our engineering spirit, it’s an exciting environment designed to fuel and realise ambition
