About us
At Dyson we think differently, challenge convention and are unafraid to make mistakes. We’re creative, collaborative, practical and enthusiastic. In our world‑class Research, Design & Development (RDD) organisation you’ll work with leading technical specialists and highly motivated, creative people to invent, design and develop market‑leading products. Truly different and better.
About the role
As a Design Engineer in New Product Innovation (NPI), you’ll help discover and realise disruptive concepts and enabling technologies for future product categories. You’ll move quickly from idea to experiment to prototype, owning defined work packages with guidance from senior engineers, generating evidence that informs product direction and de‑risks development. You’ll collaborate closely with engineers, designers, scientists, specialists, downstream teams and external partners to create new features, technologies and product formats.
What we need you to do…
- Contribute ideas and spot market/user opportunities, turning first‑principles thinking into concept options in your area with support from senior team members.
- Prototype rapidly (hand‑built rigs and 3D‑printed parts) to evaluate feasibility, user value and performance; test multiple hypotheses in parallel to answer key questions quickly.
- Design and integrate mechanical elements (mechanisms, actuators, transmissions) into early prototypes to prove function and performance improvements.
- Use CAD (e.g., NX) to develop parts and simple subsystems.
- Design test methods and rigs; execute lab experiments and basic simulations/hand calculations to validate performance, reliability and robustness, balancing cost and manufacturability.
- Analyse and present results clearly (data, insight and recommendations) in team design reviews and with cross‑functional stakeholders.
- Maintain documentation (specifications, design rationale, test plans, risk logs), ensuring traceability and good engineering practice.
- Collaborate with Research/NST and external suppliers to integrate novel technologies into concepts and subsystems.
- Stay current with relevant industry trends, tools and methods; bring fresh thinking to elevate design and performance.
- Contribute to continuous improvement across the team (methods, tools, safety, lab practices).
About you
Qualifications & experience
- Degree (or equivalent) in Engineering or Science or a closely related discipline; exposure to product/industrial design is a plus.
- 2+ years’ experience in product development or a related field.
- Demonstrable creativity and first‑principles problem solving, with an iterative, evidence‑led approach (prototype → test → learn → iterate).
- Solid mechanical design fundamentals (materials, mechanisms) and proficiency in 3D CAD (NX preferred); familiarity with PLM (Teamcenter) advantageous.
- Experience validating concepts via hand calculations, and via rapid lab testing and bespoke rigs.
- Hands‑on with prototyping and rig‑building.
- Awareness of manufacturing processes and tooling, DFM/DFA, and early cost/performance trade‑offs.
- Clear, concise communication. Able to document and present your work.
- Proficient in written and spoken English to collaborate with global teams.
How you’ll work
- User‑focused and methodical, with a bias to experiment and learn quickly.
- Growth mindset. Coachable, curious, and eager to deepen your technical range.
- Organised and proactive: able to plan and prioritise your tasks, ask for help early, and close actions reliably in a fast‑paced, changeable environment.
Benefits
