Dyson has a strong and influential Quality and Product Safety business function. The Product Safety team is categorized into two primary streams: one dedicated to managing and driving safety in new projects under development, and the other focused on addressing and learning from safety-related issues that may arise in the field.   This role is to strengthen the project safety team by leading safety requirements agreement and overseeing the successful implementation of these requirements throughout the product development process.

Function Overview

Reporting to the Product Safety Manager, this role is focused on closely collaborating with Dyson's internal teams and Contract Engineering partners (JDM) to uphold and maintain the product safety standards established at Dyson. The key responsibilities include:

Accountabilities

  • Lead the process of collaboratively defining and establishing safety requirements with Dyson internal teams and ODM/JDM partners. Effectively manage product safety expectations and assessments to ensure compliance with these requirements, ultimately securing safety approval for production.
  • Collaborate closely with Dyson internal teams and JDM partners to ensure comprehensive adherence to safety deliverables, recording and approval throughout the project life cycle.
  • Ensure that safety considerations are included in product development decisions, providing continuous monitoring and reporting throughout the entire project life cycle.
  • Advocate best practices for safety risk assessments in development and manufacturing processes.
  • Independently manage multiple projects concurrently, ensuring strict compliance with all relevant safety requirements.
  • Serve as the product safety representative, coordinating necessary actions directed by the Product Safety Committee in collaboration with Dyson internal teams and JDM partners.
  • Adopt a proactive approach to designing and enhancing robust solutions, addressing technical challenges across projects.
  • Act as a subject matter expert in the field of safety, sharing knowledge and mentoring engineers in methodologies, best practices, and standards.
  • Proactively identify technical risks within projects, taking a lead role in influencing engineering teams to resolve issues and actively participating in the design and testing of engineering solutions.

Skills

  • Possess a degree in a relevant engineering or science discipline, supplemented by post-graduate experience in an engineering role, preferably in safety or reliability.
  • Demonstrate a robust industrial background in safety engineering and product safety, with proven experience in developing and managing safety cases and producing comprehensive safety reports.
  • Proficient in developing safety plans, conducting FTA studies, creating safety requirement specifications, leading functional safety assessments, and employing HAZID/HAZOP techniques. Capable of formulating or reviewing verification and validation test procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience working with JDM partners. Strong understanding of the RFI/RFP/RFQ process for procurement management.
  • Exhibit technical expertise to independently review others' work and establish, compile, and maintain formal documentation like Safety Plans or Safety Cases at a high professional standard.
  • Possess excellent communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex technical information into clear, understandable content for diverse audiences, including JDM partners.
  • Adaptable and responsive to changing priorities, with a strong capability to deliver results across projects with varying priorities and paces. Demonstrate a results-driven approach.
  • Highly self-motivated with the ability to inspire and motivate others. Proactively foster a strong safety culture within the organization.
